bio

Water and ink, ink and water… both are interchangeable and elemental to my work. From the ink of typography, lettering, calligraphy, and design to free expression as an artist.

Kathy Miller uses botanical and watercolour inks, watercolours, acrylics, collage and camera to explore and communicate the substance of the immaterial, of experience, and of transformation.

Thirty years as a typographer and designer guide her hand while significant and profound life experiences provide a deep inner compass. A much-awarded creative director, typographer and designer, Miller is known for instinctive contextual thinking with imaginative discovery at the heart of her practice. Miller explores what lies unseen in the liminal spaces of time between real and imagined, dreams and memories. Her work is constantly evolving, using interdisciplinary materials and expressive techniques

The catalyst for discovery is water and light… constantly in flux and exchange. Intimate, visual poems of storytelling are held within layers of colour and water, sometimes dramatic, often reflecting stillness, solitude and silence – landscapes where you can ‘receive’ time.

Collaboration and sharing creative experiences are essential to her, inviting others to play in the unseen or unremembered imagination that lives within. An invitation to cultivate free thinking and expression… to become all that you are.

Born in South Wales. Based in the UK and in Italy as much as possible…

statement

In my paintings, I meticulously layer botanical and watercolour inks, watercolours, acrylics, pigments, and sometimes gold leaf, an intricate process that creates depth and texture. I am exploring presence and absence, the duality of time and experience—representing the concept of silence and the passage of time, stimulating the conscious and subconscious mind.

I aim to capture the essence of the natural and the imagined to communicate the substance of intangible experiences and transformations. My work invites individual interpretation and understanding, encouraging a personal connection with the artwork.

My art is a deliberate departure from any conscious, formal visual language in composition and form, working in realms outside established categories, blending the conceptual with the intuitive, research and information with spontaneity and uncontrolled experimentation. It is a search for beauty and stillness intertwined with an appreciation of history, change, and decay. What gets left behind once the painting is finished has importance. Where does the art begin and end?

Within my work, I often study the interplay between our understanding of inward physicality and an abstract outward expression, re-imagining an inner nervous system in landscape form. The ebb and flow of colour, water, inhalations, and exhalations reflect our inner tidal world, the unseen brought from dream to reality.

Or referencing classical sculptures, finding the elemental landscape held within the familiar silhouette, and subverting the smooth contours and classical beauty to express the primordial elements of the material itself. Natural pigments reinforce the organic form, communicating ancient history, geology, experience, and transformation.

I also photograph this molten alchemy – the moments before and during transformation as an imaginary landscape settles into being. This metamorphosis reveals an inner truth of the final painting and the images form a body of work that is simply ‘process’.
